5 Herons garner All-State recognition
December 13, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y.The accolades continue to roll in for the William Smith College field hockey program. The New York State Womens Collegiate Athletic Association recently announced its All-State teams, which included five Herons. Seniors Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) and Erin Weir (Blair Academy/Califon, N.J.) were named to the first team, senior Brigid Lynch (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) and junior Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) captured second team honors, and senior Neely Wakeman (Holderness School/Cohasset, Mass.) received third team kudos. The 2002 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year, McKevitt completed an outstanding four-year career fifth on William Smiths career goals list (43), seventh on the career points list (104), and 11th on the career assists list (18). A 2002 National Field Hockey Coaches Association first team All-American, she led the Herons in scoring this season with 14 goals and six assists for 34 points. McKevitt was twice named to the NFHCA All-Region first team and was selected to play in the annual North-South All-Star game this season. Weir was William Smiths top play maker this season, recording 13 assists, the third highest single season total in school history. A 2002 NFHCA second team All-American, she finished her career with 13 goals and 18 assists for 44 points. A two-time NFHCA All-Region selection and a North-South All-Star, she scored the game winning goal in the 2000 NCAA Division III National Championship game. One of the top defenders in the region, Lynch started all 21 games for William Smith this season, scoring four goals and assisting on another. She was named first team All-Region and first team All-UCAA this year, while earning second team honors from both organizations last season. A two-time All-Region selection, Kulesa has been named to the All-State second team in each of the past two seasons. In 40 career games, she boasts a 26-9 career record, including seven shutouts, a 1.13 goals against average and an .831 save percentage. Another talented backliner, Wakeman proved to be an important part of the Heron offense this season. She began the year with just four goals in 28 career games. This season she recorded career-highs in goals (11) and assists (10) and trailed only McKevitt in points. Wakeman was also named to the All-UCAA first team and the All-Region second team. William Smith finished the season with a 14-7 record, placing second in the UCAA with a 5-2 record. The Herons were the runner up in the conference tournament as well.
