Heron hockey falls to No. 5 Cortland

October 16, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—First-year Kelli Johnson (Iroquois Central/Elma, N.Y.) tallied two second-half goals to lead fifth-ranked Cortland State to a 2-0 win over William Smith College in field hockey action this evening on McCooey Field. The loss ends the 18th-ranked Herons’ nine-game win streak.

Despite combining for 11 shots and 13 penalty corners in the opening session the two squads headed into halftime in a scoreless tie. However, just four minutes into the second stanza the Red Dragons (11-0) took a 1-0 lead when Johnson took a pass from Ashley Ostrander (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.) and fired it into the cage. Just over 16 minutes later Johnson struck again, notching an unassisted goal for the 2-0 advantage.

First-year Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) nearly cut the lead in half in the 63rd minute on a one-on-one with the Cortland goalie, but her shot rolled just left of the goal. The Herons (10-3) held a 13-8 edge in corners and 14-10 advantage on shots, but were unable to get past Cortland goalie Jessica Anderson (East Islip/East Islip, N.Y.).

Senior goalkeeper Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Patchogue, N.Y.) made six saves on the evening, while Anderson had nine stops to remain undefeated this season.

William Smith returns to action on Oct. 18, traveling to No. 14 Lebanon Valley for a 1 p.m., matchup.
