Dennis garners UCAA, RACA praise

Sophie Dennis '07

November 3, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College first-year forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) recorded her first collegiate hat trick on Saturday and, as a result, collected two weekly awards this afternoon. She was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Field Hockey Rookie of the Week and the Rochester Area College Athletics Tri-Female Athlete of the Week.

Against Nazareth College on Nov. 1, Dennis scored all three of the Herons’ goals to raise her season totals to 15 goals and 32 points. The scoring burst moves her within one goal and six points of the William Smith record for goals and points by a first-year. Both records were established by 2003 Heron Hall of Honor Inductee Melissa Crowley Price ’91. Crowley Price posted 16 goals and 38 points during her rookie campaign in 1987.

This is Dennis’ second UCAA Rookie of the Week award after earning the same honor for the week ending Oct. 5. She was also named the UCAA Offensive Player of the Week last week. Dennis is the first William Smith student-athlete to earn Athlete of the Week honors from RACA this season.

The Herons are the top-seed and will host the UCAA Championship Tournament, Nov. 8-9, on McCooey Field. William Smith will tangle with Rensselaer in the first semifinal at 11 a.m., on Nov. 8, followed by Skidmore-St. Lawrence at 2 p.m. The winners will meet at 1 p.m., on Nov. 9, for the conference crown and the accompanying automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

RACA is an association to recognize the outstanding achievements of student-athletes from the 10 Rochester area colleges and universities.
