Dennis, Fuller lead Herons past Union, 6-1
October 24, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.First-year Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) and sophomore Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.) each scored twice to lead 18th-ranked William Smith College to a 6-1 victory over Union College in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association field hockey match. The Herons completely dominated the match, outshooting the Dutchwomen 24-6, while holding a 12-4 advantage on penalty corners. Dennis opened the afternoons scoring, just 3:09 into the contest, finishing a breakaway opportunity. Six minutes later, junior Lily Gillett (Wheeler School/Seekonk, Mass.) doubled the William Smith (11-4, 6-0 UCAA) lead, finishing a feed from sophomore Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.). Fuller closed out the first half scoring with a powerful blast from the top of the arc on a penalty corner at the 13:56 mark. Eight minutes after the break, it was Fuller again driving home a penalty corner for her ninth goal of the season. Not to be outdone, Dennis recorded her second marker of the game with a nifty spin move in front of the cage and a perfect shot into the lower right corner just five minutes later. Making her first collegiate start, Dennis raised her team lead totals to 11 goals and 24 points. First-year Ashley Barker (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) put the final tally on the board for the Herons, stuffing home a perfect feed from sophomore Tara Baker (Rome Free Academy/Lee Center, N.Y.) at the 56:33 mark. Union (2-12, 1-5) finally cracked the scoring column against William Smiths bench with less than nine minutes remaining when senior Elizabeth Soto (Loomis Chaffee/Greenwich, Conn.) beat back a rebound for her third goal of the year. In goal, senior Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) stopped the only shot she faced in 45 minutes to earn the victory, while sophomore Susan Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine) made two saves in the final 25 minutes. Union sophomore Amanda Meissner (Buckingham/Weston, Mass.) made 11 saves and allowed five goals before yielding to first-year Jaclyn Offray Garrity (Kent School/Gillette, N.J.) for the final 15:26. William Smith will play its final UCAA game of the season on Oct. 25, when seventh-ranked Skidmore College visits McCooey Field. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., and the winner will host the UCAA Championship Tournament, Nov. 8-9.
