Falcons edge Herons in OT

September 1, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.–The Messiah College field hockey team needed overtime to knock off William Smith 2-1, in the teams' season opener. First-year forward Danae Chambers (Wilmington Christian/Elkton, Md.) scored twice for the Falcons.

Less than five minutes into the first half Chambers knocked a loose ball past senior goalie Marjie MacVean (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.) for a 1-0 Falcon lead. The defenses tightened up after that goal and allowed few scoring chances.

Late in the second half the Heron offense picked up its play and finally broke through at the 3:29 mark. Junior forward Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) collected the ball and fired a shot from the top of the circle past Messiah junior goalie Kristen Hegar (Delaware County Christian/Downingtown, Pa.) to knot the score at 1-1.

In overtime both teams missed several scoring opportunities before Chambers struck again with 5:55 remaining to give the Falcons the 2-1 victory. MacVean finished with 11 saves, while Hegar stopped nine shots for the win.

William Smith returns to action Sept. 2, when they host the Gettysburg College Bullets at noon.
