October 2, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith field hockey team is ranked No. 5 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The Herons dropped one spot this week despite winning their only contest of the week.

William Smith shutout the University of Rochester, 3-0, on Sept. 26, for its fifth straight win. Sophomore goalie Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) was rewarded for her strong play with her second consecutive Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Goaltender of the Week award. First-year back Lea Desforges (Woodstock Union/Stockbridge, Vt.) earned her first UCAA Rookie of the Week award for her contributions to a Heron defense that is giving up just 1.22 goals per game.

William Smith (7-2, 3-0 UCAA) travels to Ithaca College on Oct. 2, to take on the Bombers at 4 p.m. The Herons resume league play this weekend, traveling to No. 12 St. Lawrence University on Oct. 5, and Hamilton College on Oct. 6.
