Fuller, Dennis garner UCAA field hockey accolades
October 6, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.Two William Smith College field hockey student-athletes were honored by the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association this afternoon. Sophomore back Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.) was named the leagues Defensive Player of the Week, while first-year forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) received the UCAA Rookie of the Week award. Both players were instrumental in the Herons 2-0 week that extended the teams winning streak to six games. Fuller quarterbacked the William Smith defense that allowed just one goal in 140 minutes of action. She also added to the offense, scoring a pair of goals, including a game-winner. At Rochester, Fuller led a swarming D that limited the Yellowjackets to just seven shots, and only one on goal. She gave the Herons the early lead with a blast from the top of the arc on a penalty corner in the first half, and scored the game-winner on another penalty corner early in the second half. On Saturday at Oswego, the Fuller-led Heron D prevented the Lakers from taking any shots during the first half, while limiting Oswego to just six shots in the game. Dennis led the Herons to their fifth and sixth consecutive wins with three goals last week. She recorded an insurance goal in a 4-1 win over Rochester. Dennis also recorded the first insurance goal in a 5-0 win over Oswego on Saturday. She finished with a pair of tallies against the Lakers. Dennis leads the team in scoring with five goals and two assists for 12 points. Fuller is close behind with five goals, including four game-winners, and one assist. William Smith is 7-2 overall, 2-0 in the UCAA. The Herons will travel to Ithaca for their next contest on Oct. 7. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
