Heron hockey flys past Lebanon Valley

October 19, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore forward Lilly Gillett (Wheeler School/Keekonk, Mass.) scored twice to lead the William Smith College field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Lebanon Valley. The Dutchwomen entered the game ranked eighth nationally, while the Herons came in at 18th.

Riding the momentum from a 2-0 win over third-ranked Cortland, William Smith (10-5) wasted little time, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of play off a Gillet shot from the top of the circle. The Herons kept a 1-0 edge until the 33rd minute when Lebanon Valley’s Jen Selin (Fallston/Pickerington, Ohio) slipped a shot past William Smith goalie Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Patchogue, N.Y.) to tie the game. Just over a minute later senior Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) blasted a shot past the Lebanon Valley keeper off a penalty corner to give the Herons the lead for good. Gillett scored her second goal of the game in the 52nd minute to assure the William Smith victory.

Kulesa went the distance in goal for the Herons, picking up one save, while Lebanon Valley goalie Carla Reavis (Kenwood/Baltimore, Md.) finished the day with three saves.

William Smith returns to action on Oct. 25, when they host UCAA rival Hamilton College at 4 p.m.
