Herons blank Blue Knights, 3-0

Lauren Fuller '06

September 2, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College Field Hockey team shut out visiting Geneseo State University, 3-0, this evening under the lights of McCooey Field. Sophomore defender Lauren Fuller (Shaker/Loudonville, N.Y.) scored the game-winner on a penalty stroke with 1:27 remaining in the first half.

The Herons (1-0) entered the evening with some questions on offense after 74 percent of the 2002 team’s scoring graduated. Head Coach Sally Scatton got some answers tonight.

William Smith ran at the Blue Knights (1-1) with a relentless attack, outshooting the visitors 12-0 in the first half and 19-0 for the game.

It was the 12th shot of the night that broke the scoring drought, negating a spectacular individual defensive effort by Geneseo senior defender Lauren Fritz (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.). Fritz made two defensive saves from in close on consecutive shots by first-year forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.), but Fuller was awarded the stroke when an infraction was signaled on the ensuing scrum in front of the cage.

Sophomore forward Tara Baker (Rome Free Academy/Lee Center, N.Y.) tacked on an insurance goal just 64 seconds into the second half on a blast from the top of the arc.

Sophomore forward Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) closed out the scoring, finishing a feed from Dennis.

Senior goalie Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) recorded her eighth career shutout without facing a shot, while sophomore Amanda Carver (Canastota/Canastota, N.Y.) turned away nine shots for Geneseo.

The Herons return to action at 1 p.m., on Sept. 6, when Messiah visits McCooey Field.
