Herons top Bullets, 4-2

GENEVA, N.Y.–The William Smith field hockey team rebounded from a season opening loss to defeat Gettysburg College 4-2. Senior forward Jackie Hall (Berkshire School/Newport, R.I.) netted her first two goals of the season in the victory.

At the 28:17 mark of the first half, Hall redirected a shot from senior forward Carrie Cicciarelli (Whitney Point/Lisle, N.Y.) to give the Herons the 1-0 lead. Two minutes later senior forward Aimee Bois (Medfield/Medfield, Mass.) tied the game, firing a shot past senior goalie Marjie MacVean (Johnstown/Johnstown, N.Y.). With 16:27 remaining in the half, first-year Lily Gillett (Wheeler School/Seekonk, Mass.) put the Herons in front for good with her first collegiate goal.

In the second half, Hall extended the lead to 3-1 with the eventual game-winner at the 21:50 mark. The Bullets cut the lead to one with a goal from senior midfielder Kristy Moore (Stuart Country Day/Mercerville, N.J.) but couldn't get the equalizer. A minute and 16 seconds later, first-year Sarah Silverio (Radnor/Villanova, Pa.) iced the game with her first career goal as the Herons captured the 4-2 win.

William Smith senior midfielder Nicky Livingston (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.) recorded two assists on the day. In goal, MacVean stopped three shots for the win, while sophomore goalie Jessy O'Neill (Gwynedd Mercy Academy/Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) made six saves for Gettysburg (1-1).

The Herons (1-1) are back in action on Sept. 6, when they host the Geneseo Blue Knights at 4 p.m.
