Herons top Dutchwomen, 3-2

September 21, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--Junior forward Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) scored all three goals as the William Smith College field hockey team edged Union College, 3-2, to open its Upstate College Athletic Association schedule.

In the first half, the Herons controlled the play outshooting the Dutchwomen 14-1. McKevitt gave William Smith the lead for good just 1:40 into the contest, finishing a pass from senior forward Carrie Cicciarelli (Whitney Point/Lisle, N.Y.). The Herons continued to create opportunities with aggressive play until McKevitt struck again at the 11:19 mark. After stealing the ball away from a Union defender, McKevitt wristed the ball over the shoulder of senior Dutchwoman goalie Jessica Wells (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) for a 2-0 William Smith lead.

Union took advantage of its chances in the second half. At the 25:14 mark, junior forward Terra Lederhouse (Wilson/Ransomville, N.Y.) fired a shot past sophomore goalie Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Patchogue, N.Y.) on the rebound, to cut the lead in half. McKevitt completed her hat trick just over six minutes later with an assist from junior midfielder Erin Weir (Blair Academy/Califon, N.J.) for a 3-1 Heron lead. With 12:40 to go Lederhouse again cut the lead to one, firing a pass from senior back Yvonne Tuchetti (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.J.) through a crowd. The William Smith defense stiffened after the goal and the Dutchwomen never threatened again.

Kulesa made four saves for her third career win in as many starts. Wells stopped 12 shots for Union (1-3, 0-2 UCAA). The Herons outshot the Dutchwomen 25-7.

William Smith (5-2, 1-0 UCAA) returns to action on Sept. 22, when it hosts UCAA rival Skidmore College at 2 p.m.
