GENEVA, N.Y.—The 18th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team posted its seventh shutout of the season this afternoon on McCooey Field, blanking Vassar College, 4-0. The victory extends the Herons’ win streak to eight games.

William Smith (9-2, 4-0 UCAA) posted a pair of goals in each half and completely controlled the tempo of the match. The Herons outshot the Brewers 26-4 and held an 18-6 advantage on penalty corners.

Junior forward Lily Gillett (Wheeler School/Seekonk, Mass.) opened the scoring 17:36 into the contest with her first goal of the season, a put back off a rebound. Nine minutes later, first-year Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season with a nifty dribbling move in front, that put her past the goalie looking at a wide open cage.

After the break, Gillett reproduced her first goal on another rebound four and a half minutes into the frame. The goal chased Vassar (3-9, 1-3) starter Tara Trifon (Bronx High School of Science/Coronado, Calif.) from the goal. She finished with seven saves in 39:28.

Sophomore midfielder Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) closed out the afternoon’s scoring at the 58:12 mark, finishing a feed from junior midfielder Angie Dann (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.).

In goal, senior Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) and sophomore Susan Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, N.Y.) each made one save to preserve the shutout.

Junior Sharla Alegria (Dighton-Rehoboth/N. Dighton, Mass.) made four saves in the final 30:32 for the Brewers.

The score could have been much more lopsided if not for the strong defensive play of Vassar senior back Maureen Kenealy (Wellesley/Wellesley, Mass.), who registered four defensive saves.

William Smith returns to action on Oct. 11, when the Herons play host to another UCAA rival, Rensselaer. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. on McCooey Field.
