Herons edge Red Hawks, 2-1 October 20, 2001 GENEVA, N.Y.--The fourth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a 2-1 victory over 19th-ranked Rensselaer. The win was the Herons' 18th straight Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association victory. Senior forward Jackie Hall (Berkshire School/Newport, R.I.) gave William Smith a 1-0 lead with 21:39 remaining in the first half. The Herons outshot the Red Hawks 17-6 in the opening 35 minutes. William Smith continued to pressure Rensselaer in the second half until Hall set up senior midfielder Nicky Livingston's (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.) eventual game-winner at the 27:03 mark of the second half. Senior forward Jenn Amyot (Wynantskill, N.Y.) cut the Herons' lead to one on a an assist from junior back Katie Coleman (Hopewell Jct., N.Y.) with just over 12 minutes left, but William Smith held on for the 2-1 win. In goal, sophomore Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) made four saves for the Herons. Junior Cathy Hotchkiss (White Plains, N.Y.) stopped 19 shots for Rensselaer. William Smith will now await the NCAA selection show to find out who and where they will be playing in the NCAA Tournament.
