August 8, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.–William Smith College Field Hockey Head Coach Sally Scatton announced today the appointment of Becky Karver, a native of Boyertown, Pa., to serve as the Herons' assistant coach for the 2001 season. A talented two-sport student-athlete at Ithaca College, Karver will also assist the William Smith lacrosse team in the spring.

A 2001 graduate of Ithaca with a bachelor's degree in sports information and communications, Karver was named the 2001 James K. Harris Award winner, as the Bombers' top multi-sport senior athlete. A second-team All-American in field hockey and lacrosse, she led both teams to postseason play in all eight seasons.

A four-year starter in field hockey, she served as team captain as a senior. The Bombers earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament in 1997, 1998, and 2000, while earning a berth in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament in 1999. An outstanding student-athlete, she was named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad in 1999 and 2000.

In lacrosse, Karver was a three-year starter and a two-time captain. During her career, Ithaca reached the NCAA Tournament twice (1998, 2001) and the ECAC Tournament twice (1999, 2000). The Bombers captured the 2000 ECAC Championship, as well as the 2001 NYSWCAA Championship. Karver was a two-time NYSWCAA All-Tournament team selection (2000, 2001).

The Herons field hockey team returns 20 letterwinners from last season's national championship squad, including seven starters. William Smith posted a 20-1 record in 2000, winning 20 consecutive games en route the program's third national championship. The Herons open their title defense at 1 p.m., on Sept. 1, when they host Messiah College, the only team to beat William Smith last season.
