Kulesa, Dennis receive UCAA honors
October 27, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.Following a 1-0 overtime upset of then seventh-ranked Skidmore College, the William Smith College field hockey team earned the top two weekly awards handed out by the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association this afternoon. Senior goalie Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) was named the leagues Defensive Performer of the Week, while first-year forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) earned the Offensive Performer of the Week award. Kulesa did not allow a goal in 117:01 of work on the weekend, making five saves. Against Union in 45 minutes, she stopped the only shot that came her way. The following afternoon against seventh-ranked Skidmore she turned away four shots, including an outstanding kick save in the second half to shutout Skidmore. It was the first time the potent Thoroughbred offense (4.33 gpg) was held without a goal since Oct. 16, 2002. Dennis scored three goals in a 2-0 weekend for the Herons that secured the top spot in the UCAA Tournament (Nov. 8-9). Against Union on Friday, she netted a goal in each half as the Herons dispatched the Dutchwomen 6-1. The following afternoon against seventh-ranked Skidmore, she returned late in the second half from a first half injury and scored the game-winner in overtime, her team-leading 12th goal of the year. The win was the first for the Herons over the Thoroughbreds since Sept. 22, 2001. William Smith (12-4) will close out the regular season at 1 p.m., on Nov. 1, when the Herons host the Nazareth Golden Flyers (3-12) on McCooey Field.
