Red Dragons top Herons in 2ot

October 10, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The third-ranked SUNY-Cortland field hockey team needed double-overtime to defeat No. 2 William Smith, 2-1. The loss was the Herons' second in overtime this season and ends their eight-game win streak.

The Red Dragons controlled the play early, pressuring William Smith in its own end. Cortland's aggressive play earned them 10 first half penalty corners and they took advantage. At the 26:16 mark, junior back Janet Pohle (Eden/Eden, N.Y.) set up a blast by junior forward Julie Gentner (Williamsville South/Williamsville, N.Y.) to give Cortland a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Herons evened the play, spending more time in Red Dragon territory. With just 7:04 left in regulation, first-year forward Stephanie Karuzas (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) buried a loose ball for her first collegiate goal to tie the game at one.

In the first overtime, Gentner was robbed of a sure goal on a defensive save by junior midfielder Erin Weir (Blair Academy/Califon, N.J.). Just minutes later, junior forward Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) was stopped on a break away by Red Dragon senior goalie Becky Gillette (Marathon/Marathon, N.Y.).

Cortland controlled the second overtime, outshooting William Smith 7-0. The Red Dragons were robbed once more on a defensive save by Weir before first-year forward Ashley Ostrander (Whitney Point/Whitney Point, N.Y.) scored the game-winner with just 1:02 remaining.

In goal, sophomore goalie Jessica Kulesa (Garden City/Garden City, N.Y.) stopped 14 shots for the Herons. Gillette finished eight saves for Cortland (11-2).

William Smith (10-3) travels to 13th-ranked Lebanon Valley College on Oct. 13, for a noon game. Last season, the Herons shut out the Dutchwomen 2-0 in Geneva.
