William Smith places 7 on NFHCA National Academic Squad; Herons honored for GPAs above 3.3

GENEVA, N.Y.—Seven members of the William Smith College field hockey team were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Academic Squad which was released today.

Senior defender Eryn Apanovitch (Pomperaug/Middlebury, Conn.), sophomore defender Lea Desforges (Woodstock Union/Stockbridge, Vt.), first-year forward Melissa Fitch (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.), first-year goalie Susan Jordan (Boothbay/Boothbay, Maine), sophomore midfielder Emma Leslie (Towson/Towson, Md.), senior forward Sheila McKevitt (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.), and sophomore forward Sarah Silverio (Radnor/Villanova, Pa.) were recognized for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher.

Both Apanovitch and McKevitt have been named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad in each of the past three seasons.

William Smith finished the 2002 season with a 14-7 record, placing second in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association with a 5-2 record. The Herons were the runners-up in the conference tournament as well. William Smith earned an invitation to the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Championship tournament, the 16th consecutive postseason appearance for the Herons.

A total of 751 players from 114 Division III schools were honored on the team. The UCAA (Hamilton, Rensselaer, Rochester, St. Lawrence, Skidmore, Vassar, William Smith) placed a total of 45 players on the squad.
