Fitzgerald nets five to lead Colorado College past Denison

April 2, 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—Colorado College sophomore Kate Fitzgerald (Sudbury, Mass.) scored a game-high five goals and added an assist to lead the Tigers’ women’s lacrosse team to a 13-7 victory over Denison University in the annual Heron Draw this afternoon in Geneva, N.Y.

Fitzgerald scored the game’s first goal 1:59 into the contest, but the Big Red tallied three of the next four, including two from first-year Quinn Simmons (Medina/Medina, Ohio), to take a 3-2 lead over seventh-ranked Colorado College with 12:57 left in the first half.

Senior Lizzie Franke (Winnetka, Ill.) tied the game just over a minute later off an assist from Blair Daverman (Glencoe, Ill.) and the Tigers never looked back, rattling off the next six goals for an 8-3 halftime lead. Fitzgerald found the back of the net twice during the run.

Daverman stretched Colorado’s lead to six, 9-3, an unassisted score to start the second frame.

Denison junior Courtney Abrams (Bullis School/Washington, D.C.) fired home her eighth and ninth goals of the year to cut the lead to 9-5, but the Tigers got the next four scores to ice the victory.

Abrams led all Big Red scorers with three goals, while Simmons had two and sophomore Kristin Frost (Wilton/Wilton, Conn.) added two points (1-1).

Sophomore Robin Harvey (Winchester, Mass.) and first-year Hannah Underhahl (Yarmouth, Maine) both added a pair of scores for Colorado College.

The Tigers outshot the Big Red 28-16, including 17-5 in the first half, and held a 25-15 advantage on ground balls.

Sophomore goaltender Carolyn Hicks (Hawken School/Gates Mills, Ohio) had nine stops for Denison, while junior Alana Dalton (Aurora, Colo.) made five saves to remain unbeaten on the season.

Colorado College (6-0) will meet Ithaca College in the second day of the Heron Draw on April 3, at 11 a.m., while the Big Red (2-2) will go up against host and 19th-ranked William Smith at 2 p.m.
