GENEVA, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University junior midfielder Meghan Clement (Berwick Academy/Rochester, N.H.) tallied an unassisted goal with 1:12 left in the fourth overtime to lift the visiting Saints over William Smith College 12-11 in quadruple overtime in Liberty League women’s lacrosse action this afternoon. The Herons fell just short despite sophomore Sarah Dillon’s (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.) career-high seven points (6-1).
St. Lawrence (3-0, 2-0 Liberty League) senior Carolyn Cherry (Shady Side Academy/Pittsburgh, Pa.) fired home a free position shot with 35 seconds left in regulation to tie the score 11-11 and force overtime.
With the game tied after the required two three minute overtime sessions, the Saints and Herons headed into sudden death overtime. Neither team could get on the board in the third period, setting up the dramatic sudden death victory for the Saints in the fourth overtime.
St. Lawrence controlled the draw in the fourth overtime and took the ball straight to the cage, getting a free position shot for Cherry. William Smith first-year goalie Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) made the free position save and stopped another Cherry shot before Clement found the back of the net for the game-winner.
It was a seesaw battle throughout the 60 minutes of regulation as the teams were tied six times and neither squad led by more than three goals.
Trailing 7-6 at halftime, William Smith regained the lead 6:24 into the second frame on a goal from Ali Herter (Brooks School/Topsfield, Mass.).
St. Lawrence answered nine minutes later to tie the score again, but the Herons netted three of the next four tallies to jump ahead 11-9 with 5:16 left to play.
After a save by sophomore goaltender Rebecca Timbers (Mount Mansfield Union/Underhill, Vt.) at the 3:15 mark, the Saints raced down the field and cut the lead to one as first-year Liz Skinner (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) fired home her second score of the game.
William Smith sophomore Jessica Scott (Waynflete School/Portland, Maine) controlled the ensuing draw control with 2:27 left in regulation and burned 1:17 off the clock before Timbers stopped a shot by first-year Rachel Stahl (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.).
On the ensuing possession, Cherry drew a foul in front of the Herons’ cage and connected on her free position chance for her fifth goal of the game.
Scott and senior Kate Bickford (Lincoln School/Portland, Maine) both finished with a pair of goals for the Herons.
St. Lawrence held a narrow 33-31 advantage on shots and won the ground ball battle 31-28, while William Smith controlled 19 of the 28 draws in the contest.
In goal, Baird had a solid outing with 11 saves, including three crucial ones in overtime. Timbers finished with 13 stops for the Saints.
Ninth-ranked William Smith (2-2, 1-1 Liberty League) returns to action on March 30, hosting St. John Fisher at 4 p.m., on McCooey Field.
