GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith lacrosse team is 12th in Division III according to the preseason rankings released in the January/February issue of Lacrosse Magazine. The Herons return 17 players, including five starters from last season’s Liberty League championship squad that posted a 16-2 record.
Legendary Head Coach Pat Genovese will begin her 32nd season at the William Smith helm with a 311-105-1 record, the most wins of any Division III women’s lacrosse coach. Her Herons will tangle with five teams ranked by Lacrosse Magazine: No. 5 Bowdoin, No. 9 Hamilton, No. 10 Union, No. 13 Ithaca, and No. 19 Franklin & Marshall. Defending national champion Middlebury is the top-ranked team in the preseason poll.
Senior midfielder Kate Bickford (Lincoln School/Providence, R.I.) is the team’s top returning scorer. In 2004, she was fourth on the team with 37 points (32-5). Seniors defender Liz Harris (East Rochester/East Rochester, N.Y.) and midfielder Ali Herter (Brooks School/Topsfield, Mass.), junior defender Jessica Tanner (Guilderland/Schenectady, N.Y.), and sophomore midfielder Jessica Scott (Wanyflete/Portland, Maine) also return to the starting lineup. Herter garnered second-team IWLCA All-New York Region honors in 2004, while Harris was a first-team All-Liberty League pick.
William Smith opens the 2005 campaign at 9:30 a.m., on March 15, against Franklin & Marshall in Wellington, Fla.
