GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior midfielder Ali Herter (Brooks School/Topsfield, Mass.) tallied a career-high four goals to lead the ninth-ranked Herons to a 14-4 victory over Clarkson University in Liberty League women’s lacrosse action this evening on McCooey Field. William Smith got goals from nine different players to earn the win.

The first half was the story today for William Smith, as the Herons scored early and often on their way to an 11-1 halftime lead in their 2005 home opener.

Just 45 seconds after the opening draw, sophomore attacker Kathrine Maloney (St. Anthony’s School/Kings Park, N.Y.) weaved her way through the Golden Knights’ defense and fired a shot home for a 1-0 Heron lead. Junior midfielder Emily Tate (Freeport/Freeport, Maine) added another unassisted score 35 seconds later as the Herons’ jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening 14:50.

Maloney finished the contest with a career-high three points on two goals and an assist.

Clarkson sophomore Lindsey Grigg (Watertown/Watertown, N.Y.) spoiled William Smith’s shutout hopes at the 11:50 mark with her 11th goal of the year, but the Herons got the next five tallies for a 10 goal advantage at the break.

Grigg opened the second frame with her second and third scores of the game, but Herter and senior Kate Bickford (Lincoln School/Providence, R.I.) responded for the Herons, firing home three of the game’s final four points.

Grigg paced the Golden Knights (0-4, 0-1 LL) with three goals for her fourth consecutive multiple-point game.

The William Smith defense was outstanding all evening, holding the Golden Knights to just 9-of-23 on clear attempts and recording 16 caused turnovers.

Offensively, the Herons outshot Clarkson 38-13 for the contest, including 26-4 in the first half, and picked up 13 more ground balls (41-28).

In goal, first-years Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) and Adele Hayward (Hyde School/Windchester, Mass.) each played one half for William Smith, combining for six saves, while Erin Duffy (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) had 14 stops for Clarkson.

The Herons (2-1, 1-0 LL) return to action on March 26, when league rival St. Lawrence University visits McCooey Field for a 3:30 p.m., draw.
