GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior defender Jess Tanner (Guilderland/Schenectady, N.Y.) recently was named to the Inside Lacrosse magazine preseason All-America first-team.
An IWLCA/US Lacrosse first-team All-New York Region honoree in 2004, Tanner is an athletic defender who frustrates opposing attackers with her aggressive play. She helped the Herons earn their 16th bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2004, leading the team in ground balls (57) and finishing second in caused turnovers (24) and draw controls (34). Not afraid to get into the attack, Tanner led all defenders with 10 goals and two assists for the year, including a career-high two tallies against Wheaton College in the NCAA regional semifinals.
William Smith returns 15 players, including six starters, from last year’s squad that finished 16-2 overall and captured its second consecutive Liberty League championship. Ranked 12th in Lacrosse Magazine’s preseason poll, William Smith opens the 2005 season on March 15, taking on Franklin & Marshall at 9:30 a.m., in Wellington, Fla.
