Herons ranked 15th in preseason poll

January 3, 2006

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team, led by legendary Head Coach Pat Genovese, enters the 2006 campaign ranked 15th in the Lacrosse Magazine Division III preseason poll.

In her 33rd season at the helm, Genovese ranks atop the Division III all-time wins list with a career record of 318-113-1. Her squad will feature five returning starters from the 2005 campaign.

Offensively, the Herons will be led by sophomore attacker Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.). A 2005 second-team All-Liberty League selection, Dillon led William Smith in goals (38), assists (8), points (46), and game-winning goals (2).

The Herons’ defense will be anchored by a pair of seasoned veterans, seniors Jessica Tanner (Guilderland/Schenectady, N.Y.) and Jennifer Davidson (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.). Tanner, who was named to the 2005 IWLCA All-New York Region second team, led the Herons in draws controlled (27), and was tied for first in ground balls (42) with Davidson.

The Herons will play a tough 2006 schedule, facing three teams ranked in the preseason poll. William Smith will open the season against No. 16 Franklin & Marshall at 9 a.m. on March 14 in Wellington, Fla. The Herons will then host No. 4 SUNY Cortland on April 1 and No. 12 Skidmore on April 10.
