GENEVA, N.Y.—Four William Smith lacrosse players were named to the 2006 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Empire Region teams. Senior midfielder Jessica Tanner (Guilderland/Schenectady, N.Y.), senior defender Jenn Davidson (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.), and sophomore defender Sarah Davidson (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) represented the Herons on the first team, while junior attacker Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.) earned second team recognition.
A three-time IWLCA All-Region selection, Tanner made a seamless transition from defender to midfielder this season, giving the youthful Heron attack added pop. She led the team in game-winning goals (3), was second in goals (21), points (29), ground balls (48), and draw controls (17), and third in assists (8). The first-team All-Liberty League pick was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week twice this season. Tanner scored a season-high four points four times this year. She finished her career with 39 goals, 13 assists, 153 ground balls, 78 draws, and 59 caused turnovers.
A two-year starter, Jenn Davidson anchored the William Smith defensive unit that ranked third in the league in scoring defense, allowing fewer than nine goals per game. The second-team All-Liberty League selection scored a pair of goals this season, while recording 33 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers, and 10 draws. Davidson scooped up a season-high five ground balls against Vassar. She finished her career with four goals, 84 ground balls, 29 caused turnovers, and 18 draws.
In her first season as a starter, Sarah Davidson led the Herons in ground balls (49), draws (25), and caused turnovers (22). A first-team All-Liberty League pick, she caused a season-high three turnovers four times, collected a season-high four draws twice, and picked up a season’s best six ground balls twice. Davidson also added five goals and two assists to the William Smith attack. Her biggest goal of the year was the game-winner in overtime against Hamilton on April 14. In 30 career games, Davidson has six goals, three assists, 61 ground balls, 30 caused turnovers, and 28 draws.
Dillon led the Herons in scoring for the second straight season, recording 38 goals and seven assists for 45 points. She registered a season-high five points against Union (5-0) and at Ithaca (4-1). The two-time All-Liberty League selection tied for sixth in the conference in goals per game. Dillon also recorded 30 ground balls, 16 draws, and 10 caused turnovers. In 43 career games, she has 80 goals, 16 assists, 59 ground balls, 43 draws, and 33 caused turnovers.
William Smith completed the season with a 10-6 record, the program’s 24th winning season in the past 25 years. The Herons posted a 7-1 mark in the Liberty League, finishing atop the conference standings.
