No. 13 Colorado College overpowers Denison, 13-4

April 1 , 2006

GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 13 Colorado College women’s lacrosse team overpowered Denison University 13-4 this afternoon in the matinee of the annual Heron Day on McCooey Field. The Tigers improved to 7-3, while the Big Red dropped to 2-4.

Junior attacker Kate Fitzgerald (Sudbury, Mass.) and sophomore attacker Mallory Newton (Darien, Conn.) led the attack for Colorado College with four goals each.

The Tigers pounced on Denison immediately, scoring the first six goals of the contest. Senior midfielder Jackie Russell (San Francisco, Calif.) touched off the surge with a marker at the 2:24 mark, while Fitzgerald accounted for three goals.

The Big Red sandwiched a pair of scores between a Newton tally to cut the deficit 7-2, but Colorado College responded with back-to-back goals to take a 9-2 advantage into the intermission.

The second stanza started reminiscent of the first, as Fitzgerald and Newton both found the back of the net just five minutes in. Senior midfielder Courtney Abrams (Bullis School, Washington D.C.) converted on a free position shot for Denison, but junior midfielder Kerry O’Shaughnessy (Denver, Colo.) fired home a pair of goals to build an insurmountable advantage.

Between the pipes, Tigers’ senior goaltender Alana Dalton (Aurora, Colo.) made five saves, while junior netminder Carolyn Hicks (Hawken School/Gates Mills, Ohio) stopped 13 shots.

Colorado College held a 32-14 advantage in shots and collected nine more ground balls (46-35) thanks to five student-athletes registering five.

Colorado College returns to action at 11 a.m. on April 2, when the Tigers tangle with No. 3 SUNY Cortland (6-0), while Denison and William Smith (3-3) wrap up the Heron Draw at 2 p.m.
