No. 3 Cortland overpowers No. 13 Colorado College, 14-5

GENEVA, N.Y.—In the highly anticipated rematch of the 2005 NCAA regional final, the No. 3 SUNY Cortland women’s lacrosse team extracted revenge on No. 13 Colorado College this morning with a 14-5 victory on McCooey Field. The Red Dragon’s quickly seized control of the contest with a six-goal surge to cruise to their seventh straight win.

Senior midfielder Erin Lynn (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.), junior attacker Andrea Venditti (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.), and junior attacker Gina Fazio (General Brown/Brownville, N.Y.) paced SUNY Cortland (7-0) with three goals each, while first-year midfielder Kerry O’Shaughnessy (Denver, Colo.) led the Tigers with two points.

The Red Dragons came roaring out of the gates, as Fazio and Lynn keyed the run with a pair of tallies. SUNY Cortland pushed another goal across at the 12:53 mark, while Colorado College entered the scoring column on senior midfielder Helen Sneath’s (Wayne, Pa.) score at 19:28. A determined Red Dragon’s squad closed the half by registering two of the final three markers to take an insurmountable 9-2 advantage into the intermission.

SUNY Cortland continued to apply the offensive pressure, scoring a pair of goals just 33 seconds apart to open the second stanza. Colorado College responded with a goal, but the Red Dragons answered with a pair, taking their largest lead of the match, 13-3, at the 50:40 mark.

The Tigers rounded out the scoring by sandwiching a pair of goals between a SUNY Cortland score.

In goal, senior goaltender Regina Grosso (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the win. First-year Jess Van Doren (Boise, Idaho) stopped three offerings in 30 minutes and 37 seconds of relief duty, while senior Alana Dalton (Aurora, Colo.) turned aside one shot in 29 minutes and 23 seconds of action.

SUNY Cortland controlled all aspects of the game, holding a 23-19 advantage in shots, while collecting eight more ground balls (29-21). The Red Dragons were successful on 20-of-25 clears, while Colorado College gained the offensive zone on 11-of 14 attempts.
