Dillon leads William Smith past Clarkson, 12-4
March 25, 2006
CANTON, N.Y.—William Smith junior midfielder Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.) matched her season-high with four points, including the game-winner, as the Herons overpowered Clarkson 12-4 this afternoon in Liberty League competition.
Sophomore midfielder Rachel Stahl (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) registered three goals, while junior attacker Hannah Wesley (Avon/Avon, Conn.) handed out a season-high three assists.
Golden Knights sophomore midfielder Alicia Chase staked Clarkson (2-3, 0-2 Liberty League) to an early 2-0 advantage with a goal and an assist at the 10:36 mark, but William Smith (2-2, 2-0) responded with a seven-goal surge to seize control of the contest.
Stahl sparked the Herons run with consecutive goals to even the match at 2-2, while first-year attacker Michaela Parnell (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) converted off a feed from sophomore attacker Jesse McKenna (Middlesex School/Wenham, Mass.) to give William Smith the lead at the 24:57 mark.
The Herons led 5-2 at the intermission.
In the second half, William Smith continued to light the lamp as senior attacker Louise Greenwood (Springside School/Wyndmoor, Pa.) and Dillon each netted a pair of goals. Sophomore attacker Louise Finnell (Princeton/Princeton, N.J.) scored a late insurance goal to seal the Herons second straight victory.
First-year defender Torie Allen (Governor Drummer Academy/Dedham, Mass.) collected a season-high five ground balls, but the Golden Knights held a slight 24-21 advantage.
Between the pipes, sophomore goaltender Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) stopped eight Clarkson offerings in 46 minutes and 15 seconds, while first-year netminder Rebecca Josefiak (West Seneca East/West Seneca, N.Y.) made two saves in her debut.
William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m. on March 29, when the Herons travel to St. John Fisher.
