Dillon and Herons defuse Bombers, 10-6
ITHACA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior midfielder Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.) matched her season-high with five points, including four goals, as the No. 20 Herons won their regular season finale 10-6 this afternoon in a women’s lacrosse non-conference match up at Ithaca on Wood Field.
Senior midfielder Jessica Tanner (Guilderland/Schenectady, N.Y.) netted a pair of markers and handed out an assist, while sophomore Rachel Stahl (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) also scored two goals. Sophomore Meagan Howell paced the Bombers (2-11) with three points.
William Smith (10-5) opened the scoring just 2:25 into the opening half, when Dillon ripped a frozen rope past Ithaca’s starting goalie Emily Brooks (four saves in 30 minutes). The Bombers netted the equalizer at the 7:14 mark, but Tanner regained the Herons advantage with the first of her two first half tallies. The pesky hosts responded at the 13:25 mark, but senior attacker Louise Greenwood (Springside School/Wyndmoor, Pa.) registered her 20th goal of the season to put the visitors ahead for good.
William Smith entered the intermission leading 6-4.
Stahl stretched the Herons advantage to three, when she converted off a feed from classmate Jesse McKenna (Middlesex School/Wenham, Mass.). McKenna has distributed a team leading 19 assists on the season and is tied for second in points (27).
The hosts trimmed William Smith’s lead to one with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart, but Stahl stopped the Bombers surge with her 17th goal of the season at 44:40. Dillon connected on consecutive scores to put the finishing touches on the Herons’ third straight victory. A prolific scorer, Dillon leads the team with 35 goals and 42 points.
In goal, sophomore goalie Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) turned back 11 shots, including seven in the first frame. She reached double digits in saves for the ninth time this season.
William Smith returns to action at 1:30 p.m. on May 5, when the Herons host Hamilton in the semifinal round of the 2006 Liberty League Tournament on McCooey Field.
