GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team scored 11 goals in the second stanza, including eight unanswered, as the Herons rallied past the University of Rochester 13-9 this afternoon in Liberty League action on McCooey Field. Sophomore goalie Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) turned in a stellar performance, stopping a career-high 18 shots.
Sophomore attacker Jesse McKenna (Middlesex School/Wenham, Mass.) led the offensive charge for William Smith with four points, including three assists, while senior midfielder Jessica Tanner (Guilderland/Schenectady, N.Y.), junior midfielder Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.), and sophomore attacker Louise Finnell (Princeton/Princeton, N.J.) each recorded three goals.
Trailing 4-2 at the intermission, the Herons (6-4 overall, 4-1 Liberty League) dominated the scoring column in the second stanza, registering nine of the first 10 goals. William Smith sandwiched tallies by Tanner and junior midfielder Jessica Scott (Waynflete School/Portland, Maine) around a Rochester (3-6, 2-3) goal to cut the deficit to one at 40:13.
The Herons’ leading scorer, Dillon, tied the contest a little more than a minute later with her second marker on the afternoon, while McKenna converted off a feed from classmate Rachel Stahl (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) to give the hosts its first advantage.
The Yellowjackets would not come any closer as Tanner and Finnell combined for four of the next five William Smith goals to build an insurmountable advantage, 11-5, with less than eight minutes remaining.
First-year midfielders Abby Woodward (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) and Lindsay Dakin (Rush-Henrietta/Henrietta, N.Y.), and junior midfielder Alana Tievsky (Georgetown Day/Washington, D.C.) each registered a hat trick for Rochester.
