Polar Bears defeat Herons, 16-7
March 16, 2006
WELLINGTON, Fla.—The William Smith College lacrosse team lost to eighth-ranked Bowdoin College 16-7 this afternoon.
Bowdoin (2-0) charged out to an early 4-0 lead, prompting a William Smith timeout. The strategy worked as the Herons responded with four straight goals of their own, inducing a Polar Bear timeout. The tactic worked equally as well, as Bowdoin closed out the half on a 3-0 run, to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
The second half belonged to the Polar Bears, as they never let their advantage slip below three goals.
William Smith (0-2) first-year attacker Michaela Parnell (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) recorded a team-high four points, including three assists. Junior midfielder Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.) and first-year Nina Sperry (Daniel Hand/Madison, Conn.) each netted a pair of goals, while senior attacker Louise Greenwood (Springside School/Wyndmoor, Pa.) and first-year attacker Caitlin Leone (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) scored the other two goals.
In goal, sophomore Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) made 11 saves.
Bowdoin held a 27-16 advantage in shots, while ground balls were equal at 19 apiece.
William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m. on March 24, when the Herons open the Liberty League circuit at St. Lawrence.
