Skidmore defeats William Smith, 9-5

April 8, 2006

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith lacrosse team suffered its first conference loss of the season this afternoon on McCooey Field, falling to visiting 18th-ranked Skidmore College 9-5. The Herons slip to 5-4 on the campaign, 3-1 in the Liberty League, while the Thoroughbreds improve to 10-1, 5-1.

William Smith senior attacker Louise Greenwood (Springside School/Wyndmoor, Pa.) paced the Herons with two goals, while senior attacker Lizzy Dickson (Westminster School/Fairfield, Conn.) registered a game-high three markers for Skidmore.

The visitors opened up the scoring at the 6:32 mark, when senior attacker Alexandra Ravener (Glen Cove/Glen Cove, N.Y.) converted off a free position shot, but William Smith answered just two minutes later, when sophomore midfielder Rachel Stahl (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) recorded her 12th goal off an assist from junior midfielder Jessica Scott (Waynflete School/Portland, Maine).

The Thoroughbreds regained their lead at 14:11, when Dickson scored her first goal of the afternoon, keying a three-goal surge. Both teams exchanged a pair of goals in the latter stages of the half, as Skidmore led 6-3 at the intermission.

In the second stanza, the Herons sandwiched a pair of free position goals between Dickson’s third score to cut the deficit to 7-5. Greenwood converted on her 12th tally of the season at 36:04, while first-year Michaela Parnell (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) netted her sixth marker at 43:13. The Thoroughbreds halted William Smith’s comeback bid with a pair of insurance goals, sealing their fourth consecutive victory.

In goal, sophomore goalie Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) made 10 saves, while senior netminder Sarah Berheide (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) stopped five Herons’ offerings.

William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m. on April 11, when the Herons host Rochester (3-5, 2-2) on McCooey Field.
