GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team used a balanced scoring effort as the Herons defeated Denison University 15-5 this afternoon in the finale of the annual Heron Draw on McCooey Field. Twelve William Smith student-athletes earned at least one point as the Herons outshot the Big Red 35-15.
Junior midfielder Jessica Scott (Waynflete School/Portland, Maine) led William Smith with a season-high four points, while first-year attacker Caitlin Leone (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) chipped in with two goals and one assist. Senior attacker Liz Hollick (Roland Park/Owings Mills, Md.) paced Denison with three goals.
The Herons (4-3) quickly took control of the contest, scoring the first seven goals and eight of the nine in the first half. Sophomore defender Sarah Davidson (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) opened the scoring column just 32 seconds into the match off a free position shot, while Scott netted the first of her three goals at the 9:21 mark to stake William Smith to a 2-0 lead.
Junior attacker Hannah Wesley (Avon/Avon, Conn.) and senior attacker Louise Greenwood (Springside School/Wyndmoor, Pa.) followed in suit before Scott completed her hat trick with back-to-back goals at 13:05 and 16:54, respectively. Davidson capped the run with her second tally of the game before Hollick got the Big Red on the board.
The Herons led 8-1 at the intermission.
Although Denison was able to find some offensive rhythm in the second stanza, William Smith always provided the answer. Hollick cut the Big Red deficit to 8-2 at the 30:05 mark, but the Herons responded with back-to-back scores. Both teams traded goals midway through the half, but William Smith netted four of the final five goals to round out the scoring. First-year attacker Nina Sperry (Daniel Hand/Madison, Conn.) recorded a pair of goals down the stretch.
Between the pipes, sophomore Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) and first-year Becky Josefiak (West Seneca East/West Seneca) both made three saves in 30 minutes of action, while junior Carolyn Hicks (Hawken School/Gates Mills, Ohio) stopped seven shots in the loss.
The Herons held a decisive 42-26 advantage in ground balls thanks to senior midfielder Jessica Tanner’s (Guilderland/Schenectady, N.Y.) season-high seven.
William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m. on April 7, when the Herons host Union College on McCooey Field.
