William Smith to host Liberty League Tournament
May 2, 2006
GENEVA, N.Y.—For the third time in the past four seasons, the William Smith College lacrosse team has earned the top seed and the right to host the Liberty League Tournament on May 5-6 on McCooey Field. The championship field also includes No. 2 Skidmore College, No. 3 Union College, and No. 4 Hamilton College. The 2006 Liberty League Champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
On May 5, the 20th-ranked Herons (10-5) open the semifinal round against the Continentals (11-4) at 1:30 p.m. Earlier this season, sophomore defender Sarah Davidson (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift William Smith to an 8-7 victory over Hamilton in Geneva.
The second semifinal match up pits the 18th-ranked Thoroughbreds (12-3) against the 19th-ranked Dutchwomen (10-4) at 4:30 p.m. On April 11, Skidmore used a nine-goal surge to erase a 4-1 deficit and defeat Union 13-6 in Schenectady.
On May 6, the winners will meet in the title game at 1 p.m. on McCooey Field. Admission to all three games is free.
Fans unable to make the trip to Geneva can log onto the 2006 Liberty League Tournament for live coverage of the weekend’s action, including real-time statistics and streaming audio.
