CANTON, N.Y.—The William Smith lacrosse team opened its Liberty League circuit with a 13-8 victory over St. Lawrence on North County Field this afternoon. Junior midfielder Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.) led the charge for the Herons with a team-high four points, including her first three-goal performance of the season.

Sophomore attacker Jesse McKenna (Middlesex School/Wenham, Mass.) also turned in a three-goal effort, while junior midfielder Lis Reade paced the Saints with six points, including four markers.

St. Lawrence (0-3, 0-1 Liberty League) jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage just 3:18 into the opening half thanks to a pair of goals by Reade.

William Smith (1-2, 1-0) quickly responded as McKenna sandwiched a pair of tallies around sophomore midfielder Rachel Stahl’s (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) second goal of the season to level the contest at 3-3 at the 9:43 mark.

Less than three minutes later, the Herons seized their first lead of the game, when first-year attacker Michaela Parnell (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) scored her first of two markers. William Smith continued to apply the offensive pressure as they netted the final six goals of the half to take a 10-3 advantage into the intermission, chasing Saints starting goalie Ali Mattison (five saves).

The first 10 minutes of the second half saw senior attacker Louise Greenwood (Springside School/Wyndmoor, Pa.) trade goals with St. Lawrence. The Saints were able to cut the Herons lead to 12-8 with just over 11 remaining in regulation, but Dillon converted on a free position to extinguish the threat.

In goal, sophomore netminder Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) stopped a season-high 13 shots, while St. Lawrence junior Cynthia Saul made four saves in relief.

William Smith returns to action at 11 a.m. on March 25, when the Herons square off with conference foe Clarkson.
