Baird, Fitzgerald earn league honors

GENEVA, N.Y.—Two William Smith College lacrosse players were honored by the Liberty League this afternoon. Junior Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) was named the league’s Defensive Performer of the Week, while first-year Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) earned her second-straight Co-Rookie of the Week award. The 15th-ranked Herons posted a 2-1 record last week, improving to 5-2 overall.
A goalie, Baird collected 48 saves in William Smith’s three games. She grabbed a career-high 26 saves in the Herons’ 10-8 win over St. John Fisher, including three crucial saves in the final minutes of play, before going on to stop 13 shots against No. 13 Cortland and nine against Denison. She recorded a 7.67 GAA on the week with a .676 save percentage.
Fitzgerald tallied five goals and two assists last week. She netted two goals in the win over the Cardinals, then went on to post three goals and two helpers in the Herons’ 15-5 rout of the Big Red.
William Smith will be in action again on April 6 when it travels to Clarkson for a league contest at 4 p.m.
