May 4, 2007

CLINTON, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team fell to 12th-ranked Union College tonight, 13-7, in the semifinal round of the Liberty League Tournament. The Herons close out their season with a 10-6 overall record, while the Dutchwomen improve to 10-4. They will meet Hamilton tomorrow in the championship game.

Senior midfielder Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.) paced William Smith’s offense with three goals and two assists, while junior midfielder Rachel Stahl (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) registered one goal and one assist. Liberty League Rookie of the Year Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.), sophomore Michaela Parnell (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.), and first-year Brittany Callaghan (St. Luke’s School/Armonk, N.Y.) all tallied once for the Herons. Callaghan’s score was her first career goal.

Allie Toney (Locust Valley/Bayville, N.Y.) netted four goals for Union, while Keri Messa (Hotchkiss School/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) chipped in two goals and one assist. Liz Zamore (Essex/South Hero, Vt.) and Erin Lawson (Springside/Flourtown, Pa.) added two goals apiece.

The Dutchwomen held leads of 2-0, 5-1 and 7-2 in the first half. The Herons bridged the first and second halves with four straight goals to pull within 7-6 with 25:49 left in the game. Dillon’s 47th goal of the year made it a one-goal contest. However, Union responded with six consecutive scores to clinch the victory. Five different players scored during the run, which ended on Lawson’s 21st goal with 4:19 remaining.

Junior Heron goalkeeper Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) collected 11 saves, while Steph Burlton stopped 11 shots for Union.
