GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team is ranked 16th in the nation, according to Lacrosse Magazine’s preseason ranking. Last year, the Herons closed out the season with a 10-6 overall record, finishing atop the Liberty League standings with a 7-1 mark.
Six of William Smith’s 2007 opponents are ranked as well. The Herons will meet No. 5 Cortland, No. 9 Union, No. 10 Franklin & Marshall, No. 15 Dickinson, No. 19 Hamilton, and No. 20 Nazareth. Last spring, the Heron’s went into overtime with Union and Hamilton during the regular season, winning both games by one goal.
Middlebury sits atop the rankings, followed by defending national-champion The College of New Jersey, and Salisbury.
Preseason practice begins on Jan. 21 for the Herons, who will add 10 newcomers to the 16 returning veterans from last year’s squad.
