Herons edge Cardinals, 10-8

GENEVA, N.Y.—Junior goalkeeper Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) collected a career-high 26 saves to lead the William Smith College lacrosse team past St. John Fisher today, 10-8. Baird stopped three key shots in the last three minutes of play to preserve her first win of the season. The Herons improve to 4-1 overall, while the Cardinals drop to 2-2.

Senior midfielder Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.) led the William Smith offense with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Sophomore attacker Nina Sperry (Daniel Hand/Madison, Conn.) netted three goals for the Herons, while first-year attacker Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) tallied twice.

Junior midfielder Laurie Quackenbush (Penn Yan Academy/Penn Yan, N.Y.) led the Cardinals with a goal and two assists, while senior attacker Haley Koperski (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.) and first-year Lauren Glavin (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.) each scored two goals for the visitors.

The game started with a flurry of goals in the first two and a half minutes. Glavin started the scoring at 1:20, giving St. John Fisher the early 1-0 lead, and was promptly answered by Sperry, assisted by Dillon, tying the game at 1-1 just over two minutes into the game. Twenty seconds later, Sperry connected again, putting William Smith up by one.

The teams went on to trade goals for the remainder of the half, with the Cardinals taking a 5-4 lead into halftime, following a tally by first-year Jillian Lockwood (Clarence/Clarence, N.Y.) at 29:29.

After the break, St. John Fisher built its lead to three, 7-4, thanks to Koperski’s second goal at 8:55 in the second half. The Herons came charging back as Dillon scored unassisted at 12:31, then netted a free position shot 17 seconds later, cutting the Cardinal’s lead to one.

Sophomore midfielder Lauren Peters (Dana Hall School/Dedham, Mass.) tied the game at 7-7 on another free position shot, which was followed by Sperry netting the go-ahead goal at with just over 13 minutes remaining.

Quackenbush tallied again to tie the game 8-8, but Fitzgerald found the back of the net on a free position shot to give the Herons the lead for good.

Sophomore goalie Danielle Murphy (Skaneateles/Skaneateles, N.Y.) tallied five saves, while first-year Vicky Sahm (Bishop Ludden/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) stopped one in relief for the Cardinals.

William Smith, currently ranked 15th in Division III, will be in action again on March 31 when it hosts Cortland for the first game of this weekend’s Heron Draw. The game is set go begin at 11 a.m.
