CAPE COD, Mass.—William Smith College placed four players on the ECAC Upstate Women’s Lacrosse All-Star first-team, the most by any school. Juniors Brigid Lynch (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.), Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes (N.J.)/Doylestown, Pa.), and Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) and sophomore Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) represented the Herons on the annual all-star teams.

Shea makes her second straight appearance on the first-team, while Lynch moved up from the second squad last season.

On of the top attackers in the nation, Shea has led William Smith in scoring in each of the past three seasons. She scored 53 goals and assisted on 24 others while leading the Herons to the NCAA quarterfinal round and a 14-2 record this season. Highly decorated, she was named the 2002 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-America third-team. Shea is just the sixth Heron to record 200 career points and currently ranks fourth on the William Smith all-time scoring list with 214 points. She’s also tied for third on the career assists list with Kristen McCarthy ’96 with 73 helpers.

A 2002 second-team All-American, Wynn led the team in draw controls (37), was second in ground balls (52), and third in caused turnovers (20). She was also third on the team in goals (32), assists (20), and points (52). She scored a season-high six points twice this season in victories over Cortland State and Vassar. In addition to her ECAC accolades, Wynn received first-team honors from the UCAA and the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association.

Lynch led the team in caused turnovers with 42, more than any two of her teammates combined. She also scored 12 goals and seven assists this season, while collecting 37 ground balls and 19 draw controls. Like Shea and Wynn, she too was named to the UCAA and NYSWCAA first-teams.

Splain was widely recognized as one of the top goalies in the nation this season. Sporting a 6.89 goals against average and a .558 save percentage, she garnered first-team recognition from the UCAA and the NYSWCAA, while receiving second-team Regional All-American honors. An exceptional story of courage, following her first-year Splain was diagnosed with Prolonged QT Syndrome, a condition that causes her heart to inexplicably race. On June 8, 2001, she had a defibrillator surgically attached to her heart. She sat out the 2001 soccer season, where she had been a back-up goalie as a first-year, but returned to the lacrosse team this spring.

The William Smith lacrosse team, ranked sixth in the final IWLCA Coaches Poll, made its 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament this season, advancing to the quarterfinal round with a 20-4 win over No. 12 Rowan University before falling to top-ranked Middlebury College 16-10. The Herons finished the season with a 14-2 record, including a 7-1 mark in the UCAA.
