3 Herons garner All-American accolades title
May 23, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y.Three William Smith College lacrosse players recently were named to the All-America teams by the Intercollegiate Womens Lacrosse Coaches Association and U.S. Lacrosse. Junior midfielder Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) earned second-team honors, while junior attacker Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes (N.J.)/Doylestown, Pa.), and junior defender Brigid Lynch (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) received third-team recognition. The awards are just the latest in a long list of accolades that have been heaped on the trio this season. All three were named to the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association, New York State Womens Collegiate Athletic Association, and the IWLCA/USL Regional All-America first-teams earlier this year. Wynn led the team in draw controls (37), was second in ground balls (52), and third in caused turnovers (20). She was also third on the team in goals (32), assists (20), and points (52). Wynn recorded her 100th career point on April 26 at Rensselaer. She scored a season-high six points twice this season in victories over Cortland State and Vassar. The UCAA Player of the Year, Shea led the team in scoring for the third consecutive season with a team-high 53 goals and 24 assists for 77 points, while finishing second on the team in draw controls (28) and caused turnovers (21). On April 26, Shea became just the sixth Heron to record 200 career points and currently ranks fourth on the William Smith all-time scoring list with 214 points. Shes also tied for third on the career assists list with Kristen McCarthy 96 with 73 helpers. A 2001 second-team All-American, Shea was twice named the UCAA Player of the Week this season. Lynch led the team in caused turnovers with 42, more than any two of her teammates combined. She also scored 12 goals and seven assists this season, while collecting 37 ground balls and 19 draw controls. The William Smith lacrosse team, ranked sixth in the final IWLCA Coaches
Poll, made its 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament this season, advancing
to the quarterfinal round with a 20-4 win over No. 12 Rowan University
before falling to top-ranked Middlebury College 16-10. The Herons finished
the season with a 14-2 record, including a 7-1 mark in the Upstate Collegiate
Athletic Association. |
