Colorado College downs Big Red, 17-6

April 6, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Colorado College women’s lacrosse team earned its second victory of the weekend this afternoon with a 17-6 victory over Denison University in the second round of the Heron Draw at William Smith College. The Tigers defeated 12th-ranked Ithaca College the previous afternoon, 11-10, and was the only team to finish the weekend with a pair of victories. Denison heads home with two losses after falling to sixth-ranked William Smith 18-1 in the first day of action.

Coming off an upset over the Bombers of Ithaca, Colorado College (7-2) had little trouble with the Big Red this morning, scoring the first four goals of the game. Christine Neville (Menlo Park, Calif.) started the scoring for the Tigers eight minutes into the opening session. The score would stay 1-0 until Helen Sneath (Wayne, Pa.) notched her sixth goal of the weekend to put Colorado College up 2-0. The Tigers would never look back, netting four more goals for a 6-3 halftime lead.

Denison senior Stephanie Pratzner (Upper Arlington/Upper Arlington, Ohio) cut the lead to two just 57 seconds into the second frame on an unassisted goal, but the Big Red would not get any closer as Sneath fired home two goals in 55 seconds to put the Tigers ahead 8-4.

Colorado College outshot Denison 33 –23 and picked up 47 ground balls to the Big Red’s 37. Pacing the Tiger offense was Sneath and Cassie Abel (Vashon Island, Wash.) with four goals, while Jen Alpern (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) notched three goals and four assists. Goalie Cindy Yi (Englewood, Colo.) grabbed 11 saves to earn the victory.

Senior Leslie Masterpaul (Cleveland Heights/Cleveland Heights, Ohio) led Denison with two goals and an assist. Between the pipes senior Abbigail Stewart (Kilbourne/Worthington, Ohio) went the distance, making nine saves.
