Dutchwomen stun Herons in OT, 11-10

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Union College lacrosse team rallied from a second half deficit to defeat fourth-ranked William Smith in overtime, 11-10. The Dutchwomen scored five unanswered goals to force overtime, where first-year attacker Molly Flanagan (Simsbury, Conn.) netted the eventual game-winner.

Junior attacker Nina Mandel (Port Washington, N.Y.) got Union on the board first just 2:28 into the contest. Heron sophomore attacker Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) evened the score two minutes later and junior midfielder Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) put William Smith out front with 6:09 gone in the half. Flanagan scored the next two goals to give the Dutchwomen their last lead of regulation. Junior midfielder Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) and Lasda gave the Herons a 4-3 advantage with 14 minute left in the half. Union sophomore attacker Julia Davis (Skaneateles, N.Y.) tied the game six minutes later, but the Herons responded with a 3-0 run. Toner, sophomore Brighde Dougherty (Manasquan/Sea Girt, N.J.), and junior defender Brigid Lynch (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) scored in succession to put William Smith up 7-4 with 4:39 left in the half. With 46 seconds to go, senior attacker Stephanie Maychak (Averill Park, N.Y.) scored and the Dutchwomen trailed 7-5 at the half.

Junior attacker Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) started a 3-0 William Smith run to open the second 30 minutes with two goals. Wynn added the third at the 39:37 mark to give the Herons a 10-5 lead, their biggest of the day. Union called a time out after the goal and responded with a five unanswered tallies to tie the game with four minutes to go in regulation. Senior midfielder Jane Kaplan (Brookline, Mass.) started the run three minutes later. Davis and Mandel sandwiched a goal apiece between two Maychak scores, including the game-tying goal. Each team stalled for the remainder of regulation, but couldn’t net the game winner.

Defense controlled most of the six-minute non-sudden death overtime period, but Union was able to capitalize a Heron turnover at the 3:29 mark. Flanagan fired a long shot past diving sophomore goalie Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) to cap the comeback. Four the final 2:31, the Dutchwomen played tough defense and ran out the clock.

Mandel led Union (8-1, 5-0 UCAA) with two goals and three assists, while Flanagan finished with three goals and an assist. Maychak and Davis contributed three goals and two goals and an assist, respectively.

For Herons put together three-point days. Lasda, Wynn, Toner, and Shea each recorded two goals and an assist.

In goal, Dutchwoman sophomore Elizabeth Soto (Greenwich, Conn.) made four saves for the win, while Splain stopped 15 shots for William Smith.

The Herons (8-1, 3-1 UCAA) continue league play on April 13, when they host Skidmore College at 2 p.m. William Smith defeated the Thoroughbreds 15-5 in Saratoga Springs last season.
