Fitzhugh power Tigers past Ithaca

April 3, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior midfielder Eliza Fitzhugh (Montpelier, Vt.) tallied five goals to lead the 11th-ranked Colorado College women’s lacrosse team to a 17-6 win over 14th-ranked Ithaca College this afternoon in the annual Heron Draw on the campus of William Smith College. The Tigers improve to a perfect 7-0, while the Bombers fall to 6-2 overall.

Ithaca got things started one minute into the contest when senior Lauren Smith (Amherst Central/Amherst) fired home a pass from senior Michelle Schlegel (Cicero-North Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y) for her 10th goal of the year.

Junior Lizzie Franke (Winnetka, Ill.) won the ensuing draw for the Tigers and raced down the field to find a wide-open Robin Harvey (Winchester, Mass.), tying the game at one. That would be the last time the game was tied as CC notched five of the next six goals for a 6-2 advantage at the 18:29 mark.

The Bombers cut it to three with 10:50 to play in the first session on a goal by junior Meaghan Light (Essex Junction/South Hero, Vt.), but the onslaught by the Tigers continued as they closed out the half with six of the seven final scores for a 12-4 lead at halftime.

Fitzhugh burned Ithaca for three goals during the run, while both Kate Fitzgerald (Sudbury, Mass.) and Franke scored twice.
Colorado College maintained its intensity coming out of the break, scoring the first four goals. Ithaca’s Kurstin Meehan (Martha’s Vineyard Regional/Edgartown, Mass.) fired in two goals late in the game, but the halftime deficit was too much to overcome for the Bombers.

The Tigers held a slight 32-24 advantage on shots, while the Bombers led in the ground balls category 22-19.

Between the pipes, senior Angela Marathakis (Albany Academy for Girls/Albany, N.Y.) and first-year Lindsay Mayfield (Nichols East/Aurora, N.Y.) combined for seven saves, while sophomore goalie Alana Dalton (Aurora, Colo.) went the distance, making 12 stops.

CC will go up against Denison University on April 4, at 11 a.m., while Ithaca will battle eighth-ranked William Smith at 2 p.m.
