Caitlin McLean

August 7. 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.–William Smith College Head Lacrosse Coach Pat Genovese announced this afternoon the appointment of Caitlin McLean to serve as assistant coach for the 2002 season. McLean graduated cum laude from Georgetown University earlier this year with a bachelor's degree in psychology.

McLean was a consistent presence in Georgetown's nationally ranked defense the last four years. Her responsibility as the Hoyas' match-up defender at the midfield position was to shut down many of the nation's top attackers, a job she has excelled at. A two-time first-team All-American, McLean was named the 2001 IWLCA Defender of the Year after leading the Hoyas to a 17-3 record and the National Championship game. She also helped Georgetown secure the Big East Championship with a 6-0 record, earning the Big East Defender of the Year Award. A Dean's List student, McLean was named to the IWLCA All-Academic Squad as a junior and as a senior.

The Jenkintown, Pa. native tied for second on the 2001 squad in ground balls (56) and caused turnovers (36). She also won 13 draws and posted five goals and one assist for six points. McLean amassed 214 ground balls, 108 caused turnovers, and 59 draw controls in her four years as a Hoya, as well as 11 goals and three assists for 14 points. Her ground balls total ranks her second on the Georgetown all-time list, while her draws total is seventh on that list.

A four-year starter on Georgetown's field hockey team, McLean was a tri-captain of the 2000 nationally ranked squad. She scored four goals and two assists for 10 points and made four defensive saves this past season.

The William Smith lacrosse team returns 22 letterwinners, including 11 starters, from the 2001 squad that captured the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship and finished the season with a 15-2 record.
