Herons cruise past Denison, 15-3

GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith College lacrosse team posted a 15-3 victory over Denison University to open the 2002 Heron Draw. Junior Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes (N.J.)/Doylestown, Pa.) led the fourth-ranked Herons with four goals and two assists.

William Smith (7-0) got off to a fast start, netting a pair of goals before two minutes had run off the game clock. Junior Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) opened the scoring 78 seconds into the game with her 14th goal of the season. Shea buried a feed from junior Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) 24 seconds later.

Denison got on the board at the 6:18 mark when junior Leslie Masterpaul (Cleveland Heights/Cleveland Heights, Ohio) finished a pass from senior Bridget Curley (Summit/Summit, N.J.). The Big Red (2-5) would get no closer.

The Herons scored 12 unanswered between the 12:21 mark and 51:56 to build an insurmountable 14-1 lead. Senior Gwen Parker (Woodstock/Brownsville, Vt.) netted back-to-back-to-back tallies to close the run. She finished with a season-high four goals.

Sophomore Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) and senior Amy Bowen (Concord Carlisle/Carlisle, Mass.) combined for 11 saves for William Smith, while junior Abbe Stewart (Worthington Kilbourne/Columbus, Ohio) made eight stops for Denison.

Masterpaul and Curley each added a goal and an assist to lead Denison.

In the second round of the Heron Draw, William Smith hosts Ithaca College at 1:30 p.m., on April 7, while Denison will take on Colorado College at 11 a.m.
