Herons down Thoroughbreds, 14-7

GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College lacrosse team rebounded from yesterday's loss with a 14-7 victory over Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association foe Skidmore College. Heron sophomore attacker Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) led all scorers with four goals and two assists.

Lasda set up junior attacker Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) for the game's opening tally just two minutes into the contest. Thoroughbred junior midfielder Jackie Flanagan (Shushan, N.Y.) tied the game at the 3:16 mark on a free position. Lasda netted her first goal just 33 seconds later. Sophomore attacker Liz Gorman tied the game at 2-2 with 9:19 gone in the half, but William Smith responded with a 3-0 run, getting two goals from Shea and one from senior midfielder Susanna Young (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights, Ohio) for a 5-2 lead. Junior midfielder Taryn Howard (Littleton, N.H.) closed the scoring in the first half at the 20:18 mark getting Skidmore to within 5-3.

Gorman cut the deficit to 5-4 with two minutes gone in the second half, but the Thoroughbreds wouldn't get any closer. William Smith outscored Skidmore 9-3 for the remainder of the game, including three goals from Lasda, two from Young, two from sophomore midfielder Brighde Dougherty (Manasquan/Sea Girt, N.J.) for the 14-7 final.

Shea finished with three goals and an assist for the Herons, while Young added three goals. In goal, sophomore Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) made 12 saves for the win.

Gorman led the Thoroughbreds (9-2, 4-2 UCAA) with three goals. Senior midfielder Bridget O'Connor (Longmeadow, Mass.) contributed two goals, while Howard finished with a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Chace Wessling (Hingham, Mass.) stopped 10 shots for Skidmore.

William Smith (9-1, 4-1 UCAA) travels to the University of Rochester on April 20, for a 1 p.m., contest. Last season, the Herons defeated the Yellowjackets 18-6 in Geneva.
