Herons fly past visiting Saints, 15-3

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith senior co-captain Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) netted four goals to lead the Herons to a 15-3 victory over St. Lawrence in UCAA women’s lacrosse action this afternoon. Ranked fifth in the nation, William Smith improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action.

Senior Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) opened scoring for the Herons 3:37 into the first half. Just 23 second later juniors Shana Hawrylchak (Guilderland/Altamont, N.Y.) and Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) combined to make it 2-0. The Saints (3-2, 0-1 in UCAA) would cut the lead to one on a Jenny Heffler (Williamsville South/Williamsville, N.Y.) with 22:53 remaining in the opening stanza, but William Smith scored five of the next six goals for a 7-2 lead at the break.

The Herons came out firing in the second session, connecting three times in the first 10 minutes for an eight-goal edge. Heffler netted her second goal of the game with 17:48 remaining, but the Saints would be unable to get on the board again, dropping their first UCAA contest of the season.

Senior Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) notched five points on two goals and three assists, while Lasda and Toner each pitched in two goals. Junior goalie Becca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) went the distance, making 16 saves and St. Lawrence goaltender Desiree McKoan (Hotchkiss School/Waccabuc, N.Y.) stopped 14 shots.

The Herons are back in action on March 29, when they host Clarkson at 2 p.m.
