Herons fly past Yellowjackets 16-6
April 16, 2004 Senior Nikki Traino (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.) took advantage of the first chance she got, firing home a free position shot 1:49 into the game for a 1-0 Heron lead. The Yellowjackets (4-6, 2-3 UCAA) held William Smith (11-1, 5-1 UCAA) scoreless for nearly nine minutes until junior Kate Bickford (Lincoln School/Providence, R.I.) notched her 22nd goal of the year for a 2-0 advantage. Facing a 5-0 deficit with ten minutes left in the opening half, junior Emily Riegel (Bethlehem Central/Delmar, N.Y.) put the Yellowjackets (4-6, 2-3 UCAA) on the board with an unassisted score. Senior attacker Katie Riegel (Bethlehem Central/Delmar, N.Y.) cut the lead to three less than two minutes later on a free position goal. Traino and Bickford, however, stretched William Smiths lead back at five at the half, 7-2, with a pair of goals in the final 1:48. Traino finished the afternoon with two scores, while Bickford tallied three points on two goals and an assist. Coming out of the break junior Ali Herter (Brooks School/Topsfield, Mass.) and senior Megan Sontum (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) put the game out of the Yellowjackets reach for good with their first scores of the contest. The Yellowjackets Christina Montano (Rush-Henrietta/Henrietta, N.Y.) and Katie Riegel connected on a pair of free position opportunities with over 20 minutes left to play, but the eight goal deficit was too much for Rochester to overcome. Katie Riegel led all Rochester scorers with three goals. William Smith senior attacker Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) finished the day as the top goal scorer for the Herons again with a hat trick, her ninth consecutive game with at least three goals. The Herons outshot the Yellowjackets 35-26 and held a 21-19 edge on ground balls. In goal, senior Becca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) had 13 saves for William Smith, while Rochester keeper Stephanie Bristol (Fayetteville-Manlius/Manlius, N.Y.) made 12 stops. The Herons return to action on April 20, hosting Cortland State in their final regular season home game on McCooey Field. The draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. |
