PANAMA CITY, Fla.—The William Smith College lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-2 halftime lead over second-ranked Amherst College, but was unable to maintain that lead, falling to the Jeffs 12-11 this past weekend. Ranked fourth, the Herons are now 1-1 overall, after cruising to a 19-7 victory over NCAA Division II Lock Haven earlier in the week.

Senior co-captain Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) opened the scoring for William Smith 11 minutes in with her first of three goals in the game. The Herons continued to light up the goal, netting three more goals for a 4-0 lead midway through the first half. The Jeffs would cut the lead to two with two goals in the next four minutes, but the William Smith attack was relentless in the opening session, scoring three more goals for a 7-2 lead at the break.

The second half proved to be a much different story as the Jeffs lit up junior Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) for 10 goals. Amherst started the scoring in the second stanza just over six minutes in off an Allison Aldrich (Middlebury Union/Cornwall, Vt.) goal. Shana Hawrylchak (Guilderland/Altamont, N.Y.) answered with another score less than a minute later maintaining William Smith’s five-goal edge.

Leading 9-5 with 16 minutes remaining, the Jeffs scored four unanswered goals to tie the game at nine. Junior Brighde Dougherty (Manasquan/Sea Girt, N.J.) netted her second goal of the season to put the Herons up by one, but three unanswered goals by the Jeffs in the next three minutes put them ahead 12-10. William Smith cut the lead to one with 2:10 remaining on another Dougherty goal, but was unable to get any closer.

Shea led all scorers with three goals and two assists, while fellow captain Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) netted a hat trick and assisting on a goal.

Going the distance for the Herons in goal, Splain grabbed 10 saves on the evening, while Amherst goalie Brooke Diamond (Loomis Chaffee/Longmeadow, Mass.) made 10 saves in 60 minutes of action.

The Herons are back in action on March 21, when they travel to Nazareth College. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
