GENEVA, N.Y.—The fourth-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team improved to 8-0 this season with a 13-9 victory over Ithaca College in the second round of the Heron Draw. Junior Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) paced the Heron attack with four goals, extending her streak of games with at least one point to 38.

William Smith, which never trailed, used four unanswered goals to break a 2-2 tie. Shea keyed the run, netting the first three tallies.

The Bombers (5-2) responded with three straight goals of their own, off the sticks of first-year Jennifer Bryant (Concord-Carlisle/Concord, Mass.), sophomore Lauren Smith (Amherst/Amherst, N.Y.), and sophomore Michelle Schlegel (Cicero-North Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y.).

Senior Gwen Parker (Woodstock/Brownsville, Vt.) halted a 10-minute scoring drought for the Herons with the first of her two goals on the afternoon, sending William Smith into the intermission with a 7-5 lead.

Sophomore defender Meghan Fitzgerald (Dana Hall School/Sudbury, Mass.) gave the Herons a three-goal lead less than a minute into the second half after she collected an Ithaca turnover and beat the Bombers’ goalie.

The teams traded a pair of goals to boost the score to 10-7. Junior Jessica Welch (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.) did the damage for Ithaca, while sophomores Shana Hawrylchak (Guilderland/Altamont, N.Y.) and Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) scored for William Smith. Welch led Ithaca with three goals and an assist.

Mindful of Ithaca’s six unanswered goals that gave the team a 12-11 win over Colorado College in the first round of the Heron Draw, the Herons poured in three straight tallies, including back-to-back Lasda scores to take a 12-7 lead with 14:20 remaining. Lasda finished with three goals and an assist.

The Bombers couldn’t muster any last minute magic this afternoon however, settling for just a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes.

Senior Susanna Young (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights, Ohio) scored the final goal of the game with less than three seconds remaining.

William Smith’s defensive effort was once again up to the task, causing 12 of Ithaca’s 23 turnovers, while the Herons held a 40-32 advantage on ground balls.

Sophomore Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) earned her eighth win of the season with nine saves, while junior Carrie Gross (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) made six stops for Ithaca.

The Herons return to action at 4 p.m., on April 12, hosting UCAA rival Union College.
